In a move to significantly upgrade the strategic partnership between New Delhi and Rome, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to hold comprehensive bilateral talks with the Italian Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, in New Delhi on Thursday, April 30, 2026. This visit marks Minister Crosetto’s maiden official trip to India and follows the recent signing of the India-EU Defence & Strategic Partnership in January 2026, which has provided a fresh mandate for deeper military-industrial collaboration between the two nations. For India, Italy offers a unique combination of Tier-1 technology (particularly in naval and aerospace sectors) without the heavy geopolitical "baggage" or restrictive export controls sometimes associated with other Western powers. For Rome, India represents the fastest-growing defense market in the world and a critical partner for maintaining influence in the Indo-Pacific—a region where Italy is increasingly deploying its naval assets to protect its commercial interests. Defence Minister Crosetto's maiden visit underlines the desire of both nations to move towards more structured collaboration," stated a Ministry of Defence (MoD) release.
